Laurie A. Owen psychotherapist

“I feel I bring an inclusive perspective to our shared and unique experiences of living.”

Laurie Owen, LICSW

Lead Psychotherapist

I am a psychotherapist licensed in the District of Columbia whose aim is to assist clients in expanding self-knowledge, addressing challenges, and facilitating personal growth. I have had extensive experience working in both outpatient and inpatient settings and have enjoyed working with a wide range of age, orientation, and cultural groups.

During my 17-plus years of clinical practice, clients have come for help with issues such as depressionanxietyPTSD, substance abuse, ADHD, bipolar disorder, sexual preference/gender identification-related struggles, and stress, among other mental-health challenges. My clinical approach is based primarily on the insight-based Psychodynamic approach, including Attachment and Object-relation treatment models to explore the psychological forces that underlie emotions and behavior, and how early experiences may relate to current mental-health challenges.  I also supplement insight-based therapy with some cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness techniques in accordance with each patient’s individual needs and goals. I strongly believe in interacting with clients in a natural and authentic manner, and in providing an open and supportive environment. Having been raised in Latin America, Europe, and Asia, I feel I bring an inclusive perspective to our shared and unique experiences of living.

Patient Reviews

“Laurie was invaluable in helping me work through several issues, big and small, over the years that she was my therapist.  I was very hesitant to share my “secrets” but Laurie was always very reassuring and worked hard to earn my trust. I’m a very pragmatic person so therapy can sometimes feel vague and impractical – Laurie always knew how to keep her insights grounded in my daily experiences and gave me actionable advice for my life. “

– Anthony, Age 33

“Laurie helped my spouse and I build the tools to communicate through stressful times. Working with her helped us learn a lot about each other, and helped us learn about ourselves individually as well. She is insightful, compassionate, and gives practical tools to help navigate interpersonal relationships. After our sessions, our marriage, relationship, and communication is stronger than ever. Seeing her was one of the best decisions we ever made.”

– Marcus and Linda
